The Vitamin That Reverses Ageing and improves Health

 

I read about this in the Australian Courier Mail today  and thought I would pass it on as all of us -Yes All Of Us! I am sure would find this rather interesting. Of course I like to keep up with anything new that will help with health and aging my two favorite subjects.

Here is the article:-

A DRUG that could reverse the ageing process and make space travel possible will be trialled on humans this year and could be on the market in 2020.

Australian scientists have found a vitamin, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), that helps cells repair DNA damage and it’s so good they are taking the pill themselves.

Middle aged mice given the vitamin lived 20 per cent longer and were able to run faster.

“The cells of the old mice were indistinguishable from the young mice, after just one week of treatment,” said Professor David Sinclair of UNSW School of Medical Sciences and Harvard Medical School Boston.

“This is the closest we are to a safe and effective anti-ageing drug that’s perhaps only three to five years away from being on the market if the trials go well.”

In a paper published in Science today, the researchers identify a critical step in the molecular process that allows cells to repair damaged DNA.

Research by University NSW scientists Prof Sinclair and Dr Lindsay Wu into the substance won NASA’s iTech competition in December last year because of its potential use in the planned 2025 mission to Mars.

Accelerated ageing caused by cosmic radiation, mental impairment and increased risk of cancer are pitfalls of space travel.

On a trip to Mars five per cent of the astronauts’ cells will die affecting their mental and physical capacity.

It’s hoped this vitamin might be able to reverse that damage says Dr Wu.

Back on earth the medicine promises to help every human defy the ageing process and stay healthy and it has potential to overcome the terrible side effects of cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

It’s also been found to treat Type 2 diabetes and restore vision following eye damage in animals.

A separate Japanese study showed mice given NMN gained less weight with ageing even when they consumed more food perhaps because their boosted metabolism used more energy.

Dr Wu, aged 33, is not old but says he has been taking the vitamin pill for a year.

“I am using it, I’m not supposed to take it but I feel just fine, there are no side effects,” he said.

“I take it out of intellectual curiosity.

However, he said the general population should not use it until it has been property tested in clinical trials.

And when clinical trials are complete it won’t be on the market to treat ageing, instead it is likely to be used as a therapy to treat the side effects of cancer radiotherapy.

“The big problem is that regulatory authorities don’t recognise ageing as a disease even though you lose memory, you lose movement and it gives you cancer,” he says.

To get approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration NMN will have to be registered to treat a recognised disease like the side effects of radiation. 

Things could be about to change though. A US trial is underway to test whether the diabetes drug metformin can extend human life and prevent cancer because of evidence it expands lifespan in animals.

“The makers of Metformin will be the first to push the FDA to recognise ageing, change is in the air,” says Dr Wu.

The discovery of the vitamin developed out of research into the famed life extending qualities of the molecule resveratrol found in red wine.

HOW IT WORKS

NMN works on the same biological pathway as resveratrol.

Every time we go out into the sun our DNA is damaged but our body repairs the damage, however as we age our body’s ability to do the repairs declines, Dr Wu explains.

A vitamin Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) present in every cell boosts the body’s ability to repair cells but it declines by 60 per cent as we age or when we are exposed to radiation.

“If you can boost NAD+ you can boost DNA repair,” he says.

The research found that if you treated mice with a NAD+ precursor, or “booster,” called NMN it improved their cells’ ability to repair DNA damage caused by radiation exposure or old age.

How to Make Apple Cider Vinegar at Home – Why You Should Take It

Detox Drink Recipe.

(I drink this every morning before I go to the Gym using our Kangen water of course. I have to say it is a very enjoyable drink, quite palatable. With this weather it’s very warming)

INGREDIENTS:
1 glass of warm or hot water (12-16 oz.) (I use the Kangen water from our machine reason being it is absorbed by the body much faster)
2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoon lemon juice
½-1 teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 dash cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon raw, local honey (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
Warm the water.
mix all ingredients together.
Best served warm but drink at desired temperature.

1. Cocao is the ‘In’ thing. According to the news site Ozy.com Fancy cocktails and illicit substances are not so ‘Hip’ anymore. The party goers are opting for a healthier solution to get that ‘High’. Those looking for that lift across the globe are drinking eating and even snorting the sweet stuff while getting their groove on to the music.
According to Ozy.com at a monthly dance party in Berlin, cocoa is mixed with hone, cinnamon and agave syrup and offered in vats to the revellers.Cacao pills are also being popped at substance-free gigs in London and New York. In Belgium you can take a whiff of powdered chocolate mixed with ginger, raspberry and mint.
You may ask why? – Cacao boosts serotonin, releases endorphins, relaxes muscles and stimulates the brain.

2. Eating Fat will not make you put on weight A new study published in the journal the “Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology found that people following a diet high in healthy fats lost more weight than those who reduced their fat intake overall.
This of course is nothing new but is still hard for people to understand how this works and of course still gets sucked in to the ‘Fat Free’ advertising. Let loose guys it tastes good too.
There is an exception avoid the pork belly and provolone as they are not considered the good fat.
That is sad as they are two of my favorite foods.

3. 50% of Australians don’t know how to pronounce quinoa correctly. I bet that figure is the same in most countries. They figure 16% say “Kin-oa” and 9 % who say “Key-noa” think it is the correct way. If you have read this article then you will know next time you are asked it is “Keen-wah”. Don’t ask me how they get that out of that word but that is why the english language is so hard to learn. I am glad I don’t have to learn it.

4. The best part of our fruit and vegetables are thrown away. Studies now show that you should be eating those cores, skins, stalks because nutritionally they are the best parts.

5. Signs that you are a “Worry Wart” are disturbed sleep patterns – Falling ill while on holidays – Moodiness, such as anger, or sadness – you have become a perfectionist and fear failure.
In 5 steps you can worry less
1. A trigger is forecasting something negative. You are worrying about something that does not even exist yet and never will. When this happens to you say to yourself that “Worry does not help and is imaginary”. If you say it enough it will help.
2. Be aware when this worry thing kicks in. You feel a panic come over your body, your breathing becomes shallow, you frown, you become tense. If you are listening to your body you can do something about it. Breathe deep and exhale slow and be mindful of how your body is reacting to worry.
3. Challenge the accuracy of your information. Share it with a professional. Try to be in the present and be aware of the beautiful things around you. Enjoy the moment.
4. Cortisol is the fuel for worry. Keep it low. Exercise, eat well and get plenty of sleep if you can.
5. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Try to be very clear on your purpose in life and don’t let the media, tv, or a negative friend influence your thoughts. I know from experience that a negative friend can be very draining so try to change the subject from anything that is not a positive though and have a laugh its the best remedy for anything.
