Back in Aussie

Back online again. I am in Australia at the moment visiting my Grandkids and doing a bit of business.
I looked after my 95 year old Mother in NZ for two months while my brother was in Europe.
I had a good time with my Mother but I especially have a good time with her dog ‘Charlie’.
Every morning I would take Charlie round the township of Omokoroa (NZ). It was quite some walk and I was surprised how those little legs kept up. Some days she was up to it, some not so energetic but always with the rattle of the dog lead she would come running.
Here are some pictures of one of the walks we did. As you will see it is a spectacular walk with lots of greenery and lovely flowers, beach, and bush.
I miss her.

Poem Friday – Mother Nature’s Fury

Mother Nature’s Fury

Author: Lesley Voth

Because we don’t always know Mother Natures mood
We have no way to predict who she will affect or who she will exclude

The tornado she blasted across Moore, Oklahoma
A trail of destruction, some deaths, injuries, most in a coma

A coma of disbelief of how it had destroyed their home
looking like a pile of firewood, just rubble left for them to comb

Only took minutes for it to sweep across the town and destroy
Bring mourning for some families, for others, relief and sheer joy

It has brought neighbours  and friends and the unknown together
They will all need our help and donations, your assistance in good and bad weather
Remember our lives are fragile, like some, can be whisked away like a feather

The power of Mother nature is an example of judge and jury
You cannot fight the force of Mother Natures Fury

This Picture Is So Powerful – The Toughest Will Think Twice

When I saw this picture, immediately I saw the power in it. I was not a perfect Mother, I am sure there is none that exists, but we do the best we know how or we love by the examples we have been shown. I remember a program on TV one day; I think it may have been on the Oprah Show, about how when you walk in the room a child will look at your face to see what greeting he or she will get. That has always stuck in my mind so I make sure my face says to my grandchildren when I greet them, how I am so happy to see them.

It is not always parents that we can learn from. As a child I was brought up in a very strict, firm environment. We knew our parents loved us but they did not actively show it by loving words or physical affection. The love was shown mainly in the way we were disciplined. I learnt to physically show love to my kids in the way of hugs and telling them I loved them from one of my bosses. She had a souvenir business that I managed part-time and she brought her children to work with her every day right from the time she left the hospital. Those children were smothered with hugs and kisses every day, which was, I guess fascinating and surprising to me. It was beautiful, from then I decided that, that is what I would do with my children.

My son shows the same affection to his children. For me, the big brute still give me a hug and kiss on the forehead at the age of 40 for no reason just to say they love me. To me that is beautiful.

So when I saw this picture it made me sad because I have seen examples of it and sometimes parents don’t even realize what they are doing to a beautiful soul.

Your words have power… use them wisely.

A Heroic Mother

Heroic Mother!

Heroic Mother!

During an early morning response to a house fire in Santa Rosa de Temuco, Chile, firefighters witnessed the unbelievable. A mother dog risked her life to save her puppies from the fire surrounding the burning house, which started because of a car bomb.

The mother dog, Amanda, raced back and forth between the house, putting her 10 day old puppies in the safest place she could find–a firetruck!

She didn’t stop racing back into the fire until all of her puppies were safely away from the fire. The firemen on scene could not believe their eyes. Most people have never seen a dog this smart or this brave!

After rescuing all of her pups from the blaze, Amanda sat down next to them, protecting them with her body. Onlookers called an emergency veterinary service and she and her pups were rushed to the hospital. Aside from one puppy being treated for serious burns, the entire family are alive and well–thanks to the bravery of Amanda, the heroic mother!

How Beautiful is A Mothers Love

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.”

Rajneesh

I just loved these pictures and very befitting the quote

My Favorite – Meat Loaf.

This is one of my favorite meals. It is also one of my husbands favorite, although I don’t think I cook it quite as well as his Mother but I think that is the story with most husbands. No one cooks like Mum.
This meal is cheap to make, tasty, you can make more than one at a time and freeze one and most family members like meat loaf. It is great with potatoes, corn, sweet potato, asparagus anything that takes your fancy. Per slice it is not too many calories.
If you are on a strict budget this is a great choice. You can put cold meat loaf on sandwiches or in a plastic container with salad for lunch. If there is only two or three of you, the leftovers can be reheated for the next nights meal.

INGREDIENTS
Serves: Prep: 8min Cook: 1hr 5min Total: 1hr 23min
1 pound extra-lean ground round beef
8 ounces ground turkey breast
3/4 cup salsa
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs
1 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup whole kernel corn
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup reduced-sodium tomato sauce
1 tablespoon reduced-sodium ketchup
1 teaspoon sugar

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
In a large bowl, combine the beef, turkey, salsa, bread crumbs, onions, corn, egg, garlic, chili powder, cumin, pepper, and salt. Mix well. Form into a loaf. Place in a 9″ x 5″ no-stick loaf pan.
In a small bowl, combine the tomato sauce, ketchup, and sugar. Spread over the top of the meat loaf. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat loaf reads 160°F. Uncover and bake for 5 minutes, or until the top browns slightly. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

Recipe Notes
To freeze, remove the cooled cooked loaf from the pan. Wrap with a double layer of freezer-quality foil. To use, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Bake the foil-wrapped loaf at 350°F for 20 minutes, or until hot.

Memorial Day – For Those Who Fell in Defense of the Nation

As A Mother
By Lesley Voth

I look at this picture and see rivers of tears.
I see every Mothers pain for hundreds of years.
As a Mother I would lay down my life,
To protect my children and grandchildren from War and World strife.

No matter what country a Mother lives in,
The love for her child is Strong – Deep- will always win.

I wonder, Mothers around the world – can we put a stop to these wars?
The power, the strength, the determination, I know could open doors.
Because my heart aches to the bottom of my soul.
When I look at this picture of the lives that war has stole.
