Did You Know – 02/04/2019

1.  Corn, beans, and squash are called the “three sisters.”

The Native Americans planted corn, beans and squash together so that they would benefit each other.

  • The corn provides a structure for the beans to climb.
  • The beans provide the nitrogen to the soil that other plants can utilize
  • The squash spreads along the ground preventing weeds
  • The prickly squash leaves also keep away raccoons, which don’t like to step on them.

2.  Qatar is the only country that begins with a Band Iraq is the only country that ends with a q.

3. The letter Q, W and X was illegal in Turkey for 85 years

Romanisation, it was argued, would help standardise Turkish spelling, improve literacy, and allow for cheaper and more convenient printing (the Arabic script required more than 400 pieces of type).

4. The biggest dam built by beavers is twice as long as the Hoover Dam. Speaking of Hoover Dam there is enough concrete in the Hoover Dam to build a road across the US from Coast to Coast.

5. In 2007 210,000 Americans were injured b lawnmowers. The lawn mower is the most dangerous item in the garden and the second is the flower-pot. Who knew. Oh on the subject as I know it’s a piece of useless information but Edwin Beard Budding who invented the lawn  mower tested his invention at night so no one would think he was mad.  Budding’s mower was designed primarily to cut the grass on sports grounds and extensive gardens, as a superior alternative to the scythe, and was granted a British patent on August 31, 1830. Now using a petrol driven Lawn mower for one hour produces as much air pollution  as a 100 mile car trip. Source

Last Night Together

Hate is a word that I do not use lightly.

I hate War. The pain that it inflicts on Mothers, Fathers, Wives, Girlfriends and Children is a lifetime scar on their hearts.

My heart goes out to this young woman, I cannot even imagine the ache she must feel, the tears she has shed and will shed for some time to come.

May her Angel be at her side  in all that she does.

2nd Lt. James Cathey of the United States Marine Corps

The night before the burial of her husband 2nd Lt. James Cathey of the United States Marine Corps, killed in Iraq, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of him, and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. “I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it” she said. “I think that’s what he would have wanted.”

Poem Friday – Whiskey, Wine or Beer

Whiskey, Wine or Beer
Author: Lesley Voth

I hope your christmas day was fun
The stress gone, the shopping all done

It is for me a special time to give and share
To those you love and to those that simple pleasures are rare

We take the time and make the effort to chat and skype
Email everyone, pleasant and happy words we type

In a few days it is New Years Eve
An evening of fun and frivolity I believe

2012, it came up on us so fast didn’t it
2011, bloody good its going, twas a year of shit

Though a good thing has come from 2011, many families glad to receive
Bringing our soldiers from Iraq home, permanently, not a temporary leave

It brings tears to our eyes to see the young children’s delight
Mum or Dad is home for good, they no longer have that war to fight

It does make me sad though when I think of those children in that war
Those babies that were killed, Parents hearts torn to the core
Dear Lord we pray for no more

No more killing, no children lay dying
No more leaving families in pain and crying

So I hope you had a great Christmas and have a fabulous New Year
It is prosperous, healthy, happy and full of good cheer

The New Year 2012 is almost here
So lift your glass whether its filled with Whiskey, Wine Or Beer
