Some Useful Home Hints – 03/26/2018

Perfect barbecued  Asparagus – When barbecuing asparagus, thread a wooden satay stir (soaked in water first) through the top and bottom of several pieces at a time, they are much easier to turn and won’t disappear through the gaps in the grill.

2. Dip your toes for a better sleep This I am not sure I would do but if it helps with sleep I am all for it – If you find it hard to sleep in the hot, humid weather especially if there is no air-conditioning, a bowl of iced water by the bed and cold  your feet in it when you are wakeful as it helps regulate the whole body temperature.

3. Prevent a clogged sealant cartridge – After using a sealant cartridge  plug the nozzle with blue tac and it will prevent drying out and clogging.

4. Prevent garden mould – To control sooty mould on gardenia and citrus, vigorously shake 250 ml vegetable oil and 60 ml dishwashing detergent in a screw top jar until white then use 2 tablespoons of the emulsion in a liter of water to spray your plants thoroughly. Good for pumpkin and cucumber plants I would say to stop that mould establishing itself.

5. Recycle the scoop – Recycle the plastic scoops that come in the laundry powder. This is great a measure to use in dry goods and dry pet food. Make sure you wash it well first though and leave it in the sun a while so it looses its perfume.

6. fashion tip – To remove gum from your clothes, cool the gum using an ice-cube then flick it off with a butter knife.

Small Savings – Big Fortune

1. Buy Tea in Bags not Bottles – Twelve bottles of ice tea can cost $36 if bought individually. Tea bags are about 10 cents a piece. Put tea bags into bottle with a little sugar to taste and you have ice tea. I put a Green tea bag in my bottle for the gym, healthy and gives your water a different flavor. If you have a Water Machine(Kangen) you also have filtered, healthy PH level plus electrolyzed water.
A Saving of Approx $10

2. Buy Store brands not brand name versions. Importantly make sure the product is made in you country not in another country as it is important to support your own workers. Savings can be at least a dollar per item

3. Quit Soda – Stop drinking at least two 2 litre bottles per week and you will save approximately $120 a year and of course it is better for your health.

Did You Know – 11/2/2015

  1. Global Warming – Hmmmm maybe notDid you know that NASA reported today that the amount of ice in the Antartica is growing. (Varney – Fox news)

The new Antarctic sea ice record reflects the diversity and complexity of Earth’s environments, said NASA researchers. Claire Parkinson, a senior scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, has referred to changes in sea ice coverage as a microcosm of global climate change. Just as the temperatures in some regions of the planet are colder than average, even in our warming world, Antarctic sea ice has been increasing and bucking the overall trend of ice loss.

“The planet as a whole is doing what was expected in terms of warming. Sea ice as a whole is decreasing as expected, but just like with global warming, not every location with sea ice will have a downward trend in ice extent,” Parkinson said.

2.When sea water freezes into sea ice, it releases its salt and becomes a brinicle, also known as ‘The Icy Finger of Death’
These ice stalactites are created under sea ice when cold, saline water is introduced to an area of ocean water. At the time of its creation, a brinicle resembles a pipe of ice reaching down from the underside of a layer of sea ice.
As the sea water freezes, it pushes out impurities, including salt. This makes the water surrounding the pipe more saline, and more dense, so it starts to sink. As the dense water flows down, some of it freezes and creates the finger-like shape that’s characteristic of the brinicle.
