Did You Know – 05/15/2017

2. Babies from those families that have a furry pet are more likely to have high levels of two gut-friendly microbes that are linked to lower rates of childhood allergies and obesity. According to University of Alberta in Canada after a study of 746 little ones “The abundance of these two bacteria increased two fold when there was a pet in the house.Researcher Anita Kozyrskyj said that about half the babies had exposure to a furry pet with 70 per cent of those being dogs. 3. Artichokes are packed with probiotics, which help the brain overcome worry and fear and helps make sleep come easier. Not into artichokes then onions and leeks will help with the same problems.

4. Tie your laces for a stronger knot. – The key is to tie the knot and bow in the opposite directions, not the same. You cross the left lace over the right to knot it, then cross the bow in the opposite way – Right over left.
Must be right because Mechanical engineers from University of California Berkeley in the States came up with this.
Freedom of speech has gone from that University bit at least they share the knowledge.

5.According to the University of Laughborough in the UK soaking in a bath of 40c water temperature, uses as much energy as a 30 minute walk.
Do both!

Home Made Mascara

mascara1

Never heard of it before and of course, so used to buying mascara from a cosmetic retail store that it never entered my head that I could make it myself. I have known that modern mascaras are quite toxic but of course vanity prevailed.

I was thumbing through my favorite website of Dr Axe and I came upon this recipe for mascara. I have not tried it yet but will start on it tomorrow,  I have all the ingredients except black mineral powder, {if you click on the word it will take you to amazon where you can purchase it} bentonite clay and beeswax.

Here is the recipe.

Mineral-Based Lavender Homemade Mascara

Total Time: 10 minutes
Serves: Makes one tube

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
  • 1/2—1 teaspoon grated beeswax
  • ⅛ teaspoon castor oil
  • ¼ teaspoon black mineral powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon bentonite clay
  • 4–5 drops lavender essential oil
  • Clean mascara container

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Place the coconut oil and grated beeswax in a small saucepan on low heat and stir until they are completely melted.
  2. Add the castor oil and the aloe vera gel and stir.
  3. Add the black mineral powder and continue to blend.
  4. Then, add the bentonite clay and the lavender essential oil.
  5. Remove from heat and blend.
  6. Using a small plastic bag or cake decorator with a small tip, place the mixture into the bag.
  7. Push the mixture into the corner with the hole, then place that corner into the mascara tube and carefully push the mixture into the tube. You can get these tubes and wand at Amazon

Rose Shaped Baked Apple Dessert

This looks bloody delicious. I am going to have it for desert this week.

Made with lots of soft and delicious apple slices, wrapped in sweet and crispy puff pastry

Ingredients: to make 6 roses
1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed
2 red organic apples ( red delicious)
half lemon, juice
1 tablespoon of flour, to sprinkle the counter
3 tablespoons of apricot preserve
cinnamon (optional)
powder sugar for decorating (optional)

Preparation time: 45 minutes
Directions:
1. Thaw the puff pastry if you haven’t done so yet. It should take 20-30 minutes.
2. Prepare a bowl with some water and the lemon juice. Cut the apples in half, remove the core and cut the apples in paper thin slices, as shown in my picture. Leave the peel so it will give the red color to your roses. Right away, place the sliced apples in the bowl with lemon and water, so that they won’t change color.

3. Microwave the apples in the bowl, for about 3 minutes, to make them slightly softer.
4. Unwrap the puff pastry oven a clean and lightly floured counter. Using a rolling pin stretch the dough a little, trying to keep it in a rectangular shape. Cut the dough in 6 strips.
5. In a bowl, place three tablespoons of apricot preserve with two tablespoons of water. Microwave for about one minute, so that the preserve will be easier to spread. Spread the preserve on the dough.
6. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Drain the apples.
7. Place the apples on the dough, as shown in my picture. Sprinkle with cinnamon if you’d like.

10. Do the same for all 6 roses. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 40-45 minutes, until fully cooked. Sprinkle with powder sugar.

Looks fabulous worth the try and very impressive to guests I should imagine
