1. NATURAL SLUG REPELLENT – Mix one part espresso (real, not instant) with 10 parts water and spray on areas of the garden where you’ve seen slugs and snails.
The caffeine will absorb into their skin and kill them, so if you prefer a cruelty-free alternative try repelling them with copper barrier tape or picking the little slimers off by hand (after dark by torchlight is the best time).

2. If you have these personality traits you will live longer. What Sickness Smells Like

I was fascinated by this article from the National Geographic website on this subject.

“But why would sick people smell differently in the first place? The key is that our bodies are constantly launching volatile substances into the air. They’re carried in our breath and literally ooze from every pore, and they can vary depending on age, diet, and whether an illness has thrown off some cog in our metabolic machinery. Microbes living in our guts and on our skin also contribute to our signature scent, by breaking down our metabolic by-products into smellier ones.

Basically, you’re a walking factory of smells. And if you start paying attention to them, you might notice when something’s off.”

This is an exert from the article on the National Geographic site

The article tells of a woman who can smell Parkinson’s which brought attention to the idea of sniffing for disease.
Anyway it is an article worth reading.

Humans bodies emit hundreds of volatile organic compounds that can affect our personal scents. When people have various illnesses or conditions, changes in these chemicals can affect the ways our bodies smell.

Cholera: Sweet-smelling feces

Pneumonia: Foul breath

Phenylketonuria: Musty sweat and urine

Arsenic poisoning: Garlicky body odor

Diabetes: Fruity urine and breath

Scurvy: Putrid sweat

7 signs that you are going to be successful

I like this video – Why? The reason being I think it is a great introduction to life  for your children who are now of the age that are entering the work force or going off to study at University. I believe those who have talents often do not make the most of them and end up wondering after a few years “what happened” where did all that time go and I have achieved very little. There are reasons why some succeed and some do not and I believe this guy explains it very well. We often see these qualities in our own children and I believe we should be aware and nurture qualities no matter what the age.

Enjoy

Did You Know – 12/13/2017

  1. In 1904 a magazine advertisement, ran by the Cooper Underwear Company, started advertising the T-shirt not as an underwear item, but as a regular piece of clothing. The ad showed a masculine guy wearing the product, which had the following tag line: “no safety pins, no buttons, no needle, no thread”. The purpose of the ad was to show the clothing item in a new light. The company wanted to re-brand the product and to market it as a comfortable piece of clothing that doesn’t require the replacement of any buttons. The T-shirt was, thus, marketed to bachelors, who had no women around to sew back the ripped buttons on their shirts.

2.   Eating cheese in moderation is linked to a lower chance of developing heart disease or having a stroke

3.  A one dog year is not equal to 7 human years. Dogs don’t age parallel to people, they actually age more quickly at first, then slow down. Depending on their size and breed, a 1-year-old dog is about the same as a 15-year-old person a 2-year-old dog is like a 24-year-old person and every year after that is equal to about 4-6 human years

Thought this was interesting. Not that I care too much about some of those in the picture but it is interesting that they are indulging in drinking the Kangen water. Probably why some of them are looking pretty good for their age.

soda-bubbles
1. A new study looked at whether America’s thirst for soda speeds up how the body’s cells age.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco used a sample of 5300 healthy adults. Dr. Elissa Epel worked on the study for 5 years.
“We think we can get away with drinking lots of soda as long as we are not gaining weight, but this suggests that there is an invisible pathway that leads to accelerated aging, regardless of weight,” said Dr. Epel.

Epel’s team discovered that in people who drank more sugar-sweetened beverages, the ends of their chromosomes, known as telomeres, were shorter.
The shorter the telomere, the less a cell can regenerate thus aging the body, and raising the risk of disease and early death.
“This finding is alarming because it suggest that soda may be aging us, in ways we are not even aware of,” said Dr. Epel.
Researchers found no link in cell aging, however, when drinking diet sodas and fruit juices.
