Yummy Energy Bites

I saw this recipe on the site of gimmesomoven and am off to the store to get the ingredients. Looks like a great lunch snack for the grandkids lunch and me of course.

Cranberry Pistachio Energy Bites gimmesomeoven.com:cranberry-pistachio-energy-bites:

cranberry pistachio energy bites

Ingredients

8 oz. (about 1 packed cup) chopped dates
1/2 cup honey
1 Tbsp. chia seeds (optional)
1 Tbsp. ground flax seeds or wheat germ
pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats (dry, not cooked)
1 cup shelled pistachio nuts
1 cup dried cranberries
1/3 cup white chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips (optional)

Method

Combine the dates, honey, chia seeds, flax seeds and salt in a food processor, and pulse until smooth and combined. You should be able to stir the mixture — if it is too thick, add in another tablespoon or two of honey.

Transfer the mixture to a large bowl, and stir in the oats, pistachios, dried cranberries, and white chocolate chips until evenly combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Once the mixture is cool (and easier to work with), use a spoon or cookie scoop to shape it into your desired size of energy balls. Alternately, you can line a small baking pan with parchment paper, and press the mixture evenly into the pan, let it cool, and then cut into bars.

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. (Storing them in the refrigerator especially helps the energy bites hold their shape.)

Poem Friday – Kindness

kindness
By Lesley Voth

It is always a good feeling to be kind
Wonderful for the soul, great for the mind

Kindess is not always to be found
Some are hurtful, nasty and not nice to be around

We should always aspire to attend the need of others
As we would for our family, sisters and brothers

Be genuine in all that we say
Hopefully make for someone a special day

To give and expect nothing in return
From someone elses kindness we can learn

To be compassionate and sensitive to all living things
Great rewards to our soul will this kindness bring

To display kindness with energy and passion
I hope kindness never becomes old fashion

Inspire, encourage and motivate who ever it may be
You know sometimes that kindness needs to be given to me, by me

Be patient and tolerate those who are disagreeable
We have not way of knowing their trouble, their future not forseeable

So be kind to yourself and those around you
May life for all be happy and smooth, not a dull day only sky blue

What’s Up Today – 1/18/2012

Would you not love it if your power bill was Zero Dollars?

Well it is possible. Two Orange County builders and Habitat for Humanity are building homes that are constructed in such a way it will be energy-efficient and the cost up front is not over the top.
So if you are about to build a new home this may well be worth looking into.

  • They are building houses that produce as much energy as they use. Resulting in Zero or extremely low energy bills.
  • They are equipped with solar panels, energy and water conserving designs.
  • Energy efficiency allows new homes to compete with cheaper resale housing.

So there are a lot of plus’s to this new concept when it comes to saving on your monthly energy bill.

For More information go to http://www.newtownbuilders.com/zero-energy-home/ or Google ”energy-efficient homes” in your area.

Saving Energy + Money

Here are some energy-saving tips from this Months Consumer Report.

Some of these tips you will already know and be implementing, but you may not be aware of how much you are saving and why.
There is also a great deal of saving information on this subject in my book “Simply Fantastic: Living Better on Less”. Pages 10 – 15.

Jettison the lead foot. Obeying the speed limits and avoiding hard acceleration and braking will add several mpg to the fuel efficiency of your midsized car. Also respecting the speed limit will save you that very expensive and getting more expensive speeding ticket from your friendly policeman (or not). Yearly saving $200

Fix leaky ducts. Pay a qualified heating and cooling pro to seal and insulate heating and cooling ducts that run through your home, especially in unconditioned spaces. Yearly saving $400

Adjust Modes. Manufacturers often ship television in the “Retail Mode” to ensure the best picture quality under bright showroom lights. The more efficient “Home Mode” is fine for most types of viewing. Yearly saving $30 – $60.

Tame hidden energy use. Between 5 – 10 percent of residential energy goes to devices that draw power when they are off or in a standby  mode. Video games are a major offender. Turn them off when you pry the controls out of your kid’s hands. Yearly saving $125.

Wash in Cold water. Cold water wash has proved to be better than hot to remove grass stain, wine and other tough spots. Using an 2X Ultra soap detergent is also a big help. Yearly savings $60.

Lightbulbs. The Ikea sparsam energy-saving porch bulb was the lowest-scoring CFL in the consumer report tests. Five of the 10 bulbs they tested failed before 3,000 hours. There is some question about the Energy star recommendation for CFLs. The environmental Protection Agency which oversees CFLs are planning to develop new Energy Star specifications that will go into effect in spring 2012.

Best for lamps or ceiling fixtures.

Best outdoor lights

Lowering Water Heater Temperature. You can lower your water-heating bills by lowering the Heaters temperature from 130F to 120F and insulating the water pipes.

Insulating attics, basements. Consumer Report says that you can save about $191 annually by insulating your attic, basements and other areas that may let heat escape.

Red Bull – Slow Death?

I recieved an article this morning suggesting that Red Bull the energy drink, is a slow death and should not be consumed. The email was a “pass on to friends.” While I believe that Redbull is not the healthiest drink to drink, I don’t think it will cost you your life unless it is combined with something that may cause a reaction in your body.

Anyway, I did a some research and found that most of the information was from about 2003 to 2009. In one case it said that France had lifted the ban. So I went to Snopes where I usually get information as to whether an article is true or not. This is what they had to say.

Origins: This warning about the popular energy drink Red Bull began circulating on the Internet in March 2000. There are two claims to address here: that Glucuronolactone is the evil substance it is portrayed to be in the e-mail, and that it is one of Red Bull’s ingredients.

Glucuronolactone is a naturally-occurring metabolite, a carbohydrate produced by the human metabolic system.

It most certainly is not “an artificially manufactured stimulant developed in the early 60’s by the American Government,” as is claimed in the e-mailed exhortation to foreswear the drink.

Yet a can of Red Bull contains 600 mg of the substance per can, which has been suggested is 250 times a person’s normal daily intake.

No proof has yet emerged that this would pose a danger of any sort, but it is a large enough number in and of itself to evoke concern.

Searches of The British Medical Journal fail to turn up the article described in the warning, belying the e-mail’s claim that a piece on this lurking horror recently appeared there.

Searches of the Food and Drug Administration’s web site also fail to turn up anything about glucuronolactone, a situation unheard of even in the case of drugs or substances that are merely the subjects of questions raised by consumers, let alone ones that are “banned for commercial consumption in America.” Were glucuronolactone the raging threat to mankind portrayed in the e-mail, the FDA database would be full to overflowing with articles about it.

The glucuronolactone rumor is not the only one circulated about Red Bull. Other whispers state that the drink is formulated from bull testicles, or that it’s been proved to be wildly addictive, or that its drinkers will test positive in drug tests after downing just half a can, or that it shivers on the verge of being banned throughout Europe. With one partial exception, all of these rumors are untrue.
