Weight Loss and Cold Potatoes go Hand in Hand

I know amazing isn’t it. We have been told for years that “eat potatoes and you will get fat”. Well new studies say “No”. I guess technology has just got that much better that these sort of studies come out with results that we never dreamed of.

Potatoes were imported into Europe in the 16th century. 150 years later they became the staple crop of Europe. Central and Eastern Europe now have become the biggest consumers of potatoes.

Now researchers have found that cold cooked potatoes are virtually fat free and provide an excellent source of fiber. Potatoes also provide vitamin C, vitamins B1 and B6 and are a significant source of potassium.

The central benefit of eating cold cooked potatoes is in resistant starch.
A tasteless form of fiber, resistant starch aids in weight loss due to its slow absorption rate in the small intestine.

This causes most of the dietary bulk of RS to pass as excrement. When potatoes are cooked, then cooled, resistant starch forms tight crystals. These crystals are broken up when the potato is reheated. This slow absorption also gives you the feeling of satiety for a longer period, reducing food intake.
A 2004 “Nutrition and Metabolism” study showed an increase in fat oxidation from eating the meal. It was further shown that the oxidation is sustained by a daily diet containing resistant starch, suggesting that a diet including high resistant starch foods may help you manage your weight.

Potatoes are scorned for being so high glycemic. It is true that baked Russet Burbank potatoes (noted Baked) have a GI of about 85, which is considerably higher than that of table sugar.

Among potatoes, new and some white potatoes have the lowest indexes. The reason that new potatoes have a lower GI is probably because most of the amylopectin (It is one of the two components of starch, the other being amylose.) is less branched — it is more like amylose at this immature stage.
New Research shows cooled potato resulted in a significantly lower postprandial [after meal] blood glucose and area under the glucose curve than hot potatoes.

A great way to take advantage of this, according to Professor Jennie Brand-Miller, is to make a potato salad the day before and toss it a vinaigrette dressing. “There are a couple of simple reasons for this,” she writes. “The cold storage increases the potatoes’ resistant starch content by more than a third and the acid in the vinaigrette — whether you make it with lemon juice, lime juice, or vinegar — will slow stomach emptying.”

Sooooo for those who are afraid to eat cold potatoes – “Go for it” It will not make you fat.

Amongst other things Apples have other beneficial nutrients called quercetin. This nutrient has the potential to prevent many types of cancers such as breast cancer and lung cancer. On top of slowing the aging process down, it also can prevent age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Florida researchers found three cups of caffeinated coffee a day may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia in older people with mild cognitive impairment.
Study by AARP of 400,000 older adults showed that regular coffee drinkers were less likely to die from all causes than non- drinkers were

Very interesting don’t you agree. I love these results as it makes it more pleasurable to be drinking something that is good for you

Washing Dishes With Cold Water

I thought this was funny
This is for all the germ conscious folks that worry about using cold water to clean…
John went to visit his 90-year-old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan.
After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John’s grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking, “Are these plates clean?”
His grandfather replied, “They’re as clean as cold water can get em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!”
For lunch the old man made hamburgers.
Again, John was concerned about the plates, as his appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, “Are you sure these plates are clean?”
Without looking up the old man said, “I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don’t you fret, I don’t want to hear another word about it!”
Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather’s dog started to growl, and wouldn’t let him pass.
John yelled and said, “Grandfather, your dog won’t let me get to my car.”
Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted! “Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!”
Meet Coldwater!

The Survival Rule Of 3

I assume that they mean 3 hours without shelter in the very cold or the very hot weather. I say that because I am on the beach and in the water more than three hours without shelter.

Do you know the Survival Rules of Three?

A Piece Of Useful Information For A Cough

You wonder?

This is a very helpful remedy for coughs……

Now that the cold & flu season is upon us, here’s an e-z remedy that certainly can’t hurt trying.

Vicks vapo-rub

During a lecture on essential oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils.

Their example: put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can ‘taste’ it.

Some of us have used vicks vaporub for years, but i’ve never heard of this. And don’t laugh!

It works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren’t sure why.

To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally),

Put vicks vaporub generously on the soles of your feet,

Cover with socks, and the heavy,

Deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many,

Many hours of relief.

Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines.

In addition, it is extremely soothing and  comforting and they will sleep soundly.

Just happened to tune in a.m. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines

In kids often do more harm than good, due to the chemicals in them.

This method of using vicks vaporub on the soles of the feet was found to be more effective

Than prescribed medicines for children at bed time. It also seems to have a soothing and calming effect

On sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant

And persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%!

She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her,

Coughing stopped in a few minutes.

So she went from every few seconds uncontrollable coughing and slept cough-free for hours every night she used it.

If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be amazed at how it works.

Try it the next time you get a bad cold.

The only thing you can lose is your cough.

Poem Friday – 11/16/2012 – Summer! Already I miss You

Author: Lesley Voth

Summer is gone and winter is almost here
No sun on my body, tan rapidly going – oh dear

I love the warmth of Summer I do not like the cold
The trees lose their leaves, they look bare and old

It’s hard to get out in morning and leave that warm bed
I go to the gym at 5am, its freezing, I have a screw loose in my head

Really, I don’t drive a car, I go on my motorbike
I plug-in my heated vest, the heat I do like

But my nose gets cold and the wind on my legs
My mind wanders to my breakfast of Bacon and eggs

I have already put on the pounds before I get to the gym
But i guess that’s what happens in winter, one forgets about being slim

Now there is a few good things that winter brings about
Crisp fresh air, good for the lungs and make the nips standout

Winter is a season that makes us love the sky blue
But Summer! Already I Miss You

5 more tips

This is an excellent idea especially with theatre tickets or even flight tickets so you are not dealing with bits of paper.

This is also a very wise suggestion.  It saves face if you never have to explain why  you did not get a job. If no one knows you have nothing to tell.

I never really lock my bike as I figure most thieves are to lazy to ride a bike and bikes are so cheap to buy these days why would they want to steal it. Unless it is one of those fancy bikes then you would probably want to keep it thief proof but if it is why would you want to even ride it to a place where you would have to lock it.

You would have to be a bit desperate to use doritos but sometimes there may be a call for desperate measures especially if it is cold.
